Play Conditions

  • Aim of the Game

    • Get as many of your team’s bowls closer to jack than your opponents!

  • The Bowl: Keep/Play as set of 3 (in Triples) or 4 (in Doubles) bowls (same logo, same bias)

    • Running surface

    • Bias

    • Delivery – as close to Ground Level as possible

      • Not Bocce/10-pin

      • Bounces decrease distance

      • Bounces destroy aiming line

  • The Delivery (see The Delivery Doctor: Dan Milligan, MVP Sports)

    • The Relaxed Grip

      • Two fingers on running surface of bowl

      • Comfortable thumb

    • Pre-stance (before mat)

      • Think about shot

      • Forehand (FHd) or Backhand (BHd)

      • Aiming Point – with bowl

      • Let feet/stance be natural

    • Stance Is Not A Statue

      • Normal standing position

      • Right (left) foot planted on mat

      • Bowl arm below parallel

      • Unlocked knees

      • Relaxed and comfortable

    • The No Backswing Backswing

      • Shoulder is not pendulum

      • Keep shoulders square

      • Don’t pull back

      • Let gravity control drop

    • Get the bowl in motion

      • Body and bowl forward in sync

      • Body motion not arm strength

      • Body square to target

      • Visualise break point for aim

    • Follow through is not an option

      • Follow through, Pause, 3s

      • Watch path of bowl, palm up

        • Through delivery line

  • Etiquette

    • Stand behind jack when not playing – do not obstruct rink boundary markers

    • Bowler owns mat/rink until their bowl stops

    • Loser of the end rakes bowls

    • Never put bowls in the ditches
